Nowhere Else to Go
Pairing: Leonard "Bones" McCoy/Reader Summery: When injured and on the run, you find yourself near a old "friends" place and decide to try to use their place as a hide out and a place to get patched up but get more than you bargained for. Word Count: 2717 A/N: I don't know where this came from but here it is and I hope y'all enjoy it!! I have like a slight idea of something I could do for a part 2 so if anyone would want that, let me know lol
You knew this was a stupid idea and yet you had no other options and what were the chances that you just so happened to be brought here to an area where you knew of a place that you could hide out and get medical supplies. You just hoped the homeowner wasn’t home.
The path you took was one you knew well. You did your best to make sure you were covering your tracks and you were making sure that no one was following you. As you made it to the end of the driveway, you took another moment to gather yourself and check your surroundings before making it the last stretch to the front door.
You were holding your breath that he was off-world at the moment. This would most likely end very badly otherwise. You took a moment to try to decide between trying to go through a window or hope that he didn’t uninstall your biometrics from the door. You decided to start with the door. If it let you in, you wouldn’t need to worry about any alarm system and honestly you were too tired to go through the window if you didn’t have to.
You let out a relieved breath when the door lit up green and unlocked at your handprint. You clicked and locked the door behind you and leaned against it for a brief moment before commanding the lights to come on to 40%.
You hadn’t made it more than a few steps before you heard the floorboards creaking over by the stairs. You didn’t have any time to react before you heard the tell tail sound of a phaser powering up.
“Don’t move!” You heard Leonard’s voice command before there was a sharp inhale of his breath “How-what the hell are you doing here?”
“Hi.” You tried to give an awkward wave with the hand that wasn’t gripping your side but he didn’t seem impressed. “Listen I was kinda hoping you weren’t earth side at the moment. I just need some medical supplies and I can be out of your hair.”
“Sit.” Bones ordered after a moment of silence. He gestured to the table with this phaser but powered it down and sat it on the kitchen island. He didn’t address anything else but you watched as he stared at the wound on your side.
A shaky breath slipped out as Bones turned and walked away once you were sitting at the kitchen table. You were assuming he was going to grab his medical bag, or at least that was what you were hoping he was doing. He was back in a moment proving that you had been correct in your assumption. He plopped the bag down beside you with a thud that caused you to flinch slightly. For a moment he just stood over you, not moving.
“I’m going to need you to move your hand.” He told you as he pulled over one of the other chairs close to yours. You winced slightly as you removed your blood soaked hand away from the deep gash that was in your lower stomach. “I’m going to cut away your shirt to get a better look.”
You gave him a nod of permission and he quickly sliced the shirt open. Once the clothing was out of his way he immediately began to work on cleaning the area to better assess the wound.
“You really should be going to a hospital” He stated.
“Listen if you want me dead that badly, just kill me yourself.”
“What the hell did you get yourself into?” He asked.
“Nothing.” You gritted your teeth. This was not a conversation you wanted to be having with him ever, and definitely not while you were half bleeding out in his kitchen.
“Well I don’t have any pain meds to give you so this is going to hurt. I have to stitch it up.” He sighed.
“I’m sure it’ll be better than if I do it myself.” He left out a half snort at that. After that you fell into a silence, it wasn’t exactly comfortable but it wasn’t as awkward as you were expecting. That might have had to do with the distraction of the pain you were trying your best to ignore as Bones stitched you up.
“And done.” He stated as he finished up. “Any other injuries I should know about.”
“Nothing major.” You replied. The look of annoyance was one you knew well. He didn’t even have to say anything before you turned your arm towards him and revealed a much smaller cut on your upper arm. “There is another small cut on my thigh. But I can handle those if you give me the Medkit.
“Let me.” He said as he gently reached for your arm to get a better look. Luckily both the other wounds just needed a bit of cleaning and to be wrapped. Once he was done, neither of you seemed to make a move to say or do anything else until a shiver ran through you as you sat without a shirt on.
“Here, let me grab you some clothes to change into.” Bones offered as soon as he noticed. He stepped away and you were left to just fidget as you sat in a kitchen that used to be so familiar to you. One that you used to consider your own. You took a shaky breath right as Bones came back with some sweats and a shirt for you to throw on.
You wanted to say something about how you noticed the pants were yours, that he must have kept your clothes stashed somewhere when you left, but he still chose to bring you down one of his shirts. You grabbed them gently from him and headed towards the downstairs bathroom. Once you had the door shut, you let out another shaky breath. You knew coming here, seeing Bones, wasn’t going to be easy but you hadn’t expected it to hit you so hard. You had spent the last two years convincing yourself that you were over him but you had always known that wasn’t true. You left with too much unsaid to ever resolve the feelings you held for him.
You changed and cleaned up as best you could before you came back out of the bathroom. You forced yourself to take a final deep breath before exiting. Bones was standing in the kitchen with two mugs of tea steaming in front of him.
“Listen. It’s clear you don’t want to talk about what happened, but you up and left me with no explanation and then Starfleet was suddenly saying you were behind intel leaks and were on the run, then I don’t hear from you for two years and when I do see you, you show up to our house, injured and expect me not to ask for answers?” He blurted out before you could even make it all the way to the counter. You winced at the anger that was laced under his voice but took comfort in the fact that from his wording it seemed like he hadn’t believed that you were a criminal mastermind.
“You’re right. I owe you more than just an explanation but we can at least start there.” You told him. He nodded, seemingly satisfied and motioned for you to head into the living room. You walked into the room and flipped on a lamp before carefully taking a seat in the armchair. Bones handed you one of the mugs he made and sat down on the corner of the couch closest to you.
You stared down at the mug in your hand fidgeting with the string trying to think about where to even begin. After a long moment of silence you inhaled and then let out the entire story. Bones was an attentive listener, he didn’t interrupt you once and while you hadn’t been able to look up and meet his eyes, you could feel them focused on you as you spoke.
You told Bones how you had been approached by Section 31 about an undercover mission, one that you were specially qualified for. They needed an engineer who was also a skilled hacker and who could hold their own in a fight and you fit the bill perfectly. They needed you to infiltrate a group that was dealing mostly in high tech stolen weapons. They needed an inside person to get more intel on the group to be able to take them out, from the information they had, they weren’t able to determine how widespread the network ran and they knew taking out only a small fraction of the group wouldn’t do much good.
The issue with trying to have a Starfleet officer infiltrate a criminal organization was always getting anyone to trust you. Normally Section 31 was good at erasing people’s identity but this time they had decided to lean into you being Starfleet. They had recently discovered that an officer was selling information to the highest bidder and while they were able to determine who it was, the best way to give you the best cover was to frame you. You would take on the leaker persona and join the group as someone who was caught and now on the run. You would be able to offer Starfleet knowledge and the easy ability to hack into any systems they needed.
The plan had worked perfectly, you were able to easily join the lower ranks and slowly work your way up. However, for the plan to work as well as it did, it meant that everyone in your life had to believe it. You weren’t allowed to tell anyone the truth, that included Leonard. You knew that if one day you up and were accused of such crimes, he never would have believed it so to make him believe the worst, you started to pick fights, put distance between you, you acted suspicious and tried to make sure he’d think the worst and it had seemingly worked. By the time Section 31 was ready to get the mission underway, there was a solid wedge between you and Bones, so you imagined when he woke up to you gone, a hasty bag packed and a note that said “I’m sorry” and Starfleet security officers pounding on his front door, he most likely believe the story you created.
The last two years had gone pretty well in relation to the mission. You had gotten into the group and were able to prove yourself to them and begin the climb the ranks. You reported the intel you were receiving back to Section 31 and they checked in accordingly. Things took a turn when you had made it into the interest of the upper circle. You were in no way getting admitted into their crew, but they had heard of your skills and had started to give you special secret tasks for you. The climax of your mission was when you had a face-to-face meeting with the big boss. A person that no intel had resulted in an identification of. From what Section 31 knew, no one who would talk had ever seen their face. Once you had been a part of the organization for a few months, you had come to the conclusion that was because only a select few ever did meet them. They worked from the shadows and behind the scene. You had half expected them to be someone in Starfleet or someone in a position of power, but they weren’t anyone you had recognized. You had to admit you had been a bit disappointed in that. A big break like that might have got you a way home.
Instead a few days after that meeting, you had been on a job at a bar where you had been spotted by Scotty. He had approached you angrily. It started with him yelling at you and telling you how much you had betrayed his trust, but it quickly morphed into him telling you how this couldn’t be you and how this had to be some sort undercover thing. Unfortunately for you, your partner on the job had overheard that part and it had seeded mistrust in you. You had tried to play it off that Scotty was just a dumb former colleague who had fallen for your deception but with your quick rise in the organization and the fact you had just had a face-to-face, they decided that you weren’t worth the risk and a kill order had been put on your head.
Clearly you had managed to escape with your life, but with the way that Section 31 worked, there was no record of your work and now you were both a fugitive of Starfleet and someone with a large bounty on your head.
All of this information came pouring out of you. After two years of keeping secrets, it felt so freeing to finally be able to tell someone everything that had happened. After you finished, you took a long sip of your tea which had begun to grow cold. You finally found it in yourself to look up and meet Leonard’s gaze. The deep concern for you was evident as was anger you were assuming was directed at both Section 31 and the ones who now wanted you dead.
“There has to be something that can be done. Starfleet has to recognize that you had been following orders, doing their wishes” He furrowed his brow, clearly trying to work out what he could do.
“There isn't. I knew what I signed up for when I agreed” You sighed. “I’m really sorry I got you involved in this at all. I truly had no intention, I didn’t even realize I was in this area until I was on the run and when I realized it was a split second decision and like I said, I hoped you had been off world.”
“I’m glad I wasn’t..” He admitted.  “I spent the last two years trying to wrap my head around how I could have missed what was going on, how I didn’t notice that you had been fooling everyone until the last minute. You know, Jim took it real hard. He was pissed at the idea that you had pulled one over on him.”
“I knew he would be. It seems like Scotty did as well.” You pointed out. “I feel awful about what this did to you. I honestly almost didn’t take the job because of it, but I knew that these weapons needed to be accounted for and they needed to be stopped. I mean I signed up for Starfleet to help people so it felt too selfish to say no.”
“Exactly. You did this for Starfleet and for the good. It’s not fair that you are left with being a criminal.” He huffed. “Jim will fix this.”
“Len.” You started, “I’m sorry I got you into this but you can’t involve him, he’ll have to turn me in. I’ll be gone by the morning and you can put in a report that says I broke in and then was gone before you woke up.”
“No.” He responded. “You’re not going on the run. I’m not losing you again!”
You paused at his words. You honestly didn’t think you had it in you to leave him again anyway. There was a lump in your throat at the thought. And if you thought about it, Starfleet custody was a better alternative than being on the run with a very large bounty on your head, they’d at least try to protect you. “Okay”
He let out a sigh of relief at your response. “Okay. We can figure everything out tomorrow. Let’s just get to bed”
You nodded and Len guided you towards his room. You knew that there was a guest bedroom you could stay in, but he motioned for you to take your side of the bed. You weren’t sure where this put you two relationship wise, or if he was just making sure you wouldn’t slip out before the morning, but either way, you weren’t going to complain. You fell asleep faster than you had in the last two years, just knowing he was beside you.

"In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And in all the universe, three million, million galaxies like this. And in all of that--and perhaps more--only one of each of us. Don't destroy the one named Kirk."

That is, until an accident on an away-mission damages his emotional control.

CHAPTER FIVE
Have you ever woken up from a fever dream and not really understood the entirety of what happened? Like you could remember faintly being sick and the fever but everything else is a blur. Coming too in a medbay cot, surrounded by Vulcan’s and feeling like you’d been run over is not a fun way to wake up. All I remembered was the feel of Len’s hands on my check and then the feeling of free falling. Everything else was locked away by a curtain of black. The only comfort I really had was the news that I had been one of the lucky ones. Len had been promoted to Chief Medical Officer because Puree and several other staff members were dead. Another foot to the left and I would have been just like Puree.
I was glad I didn’t remember it.
"Nell, are you sure you don't want me to get Dr. McCoy?" I had been adamant since I woke up that no one bother Len. I didn’t want to see the pain, I didn’t want to see the worry and I certainly didn’t want to see the relief.Because right now I was operating off of the blood transfusion, the sealed wounds and the haunting image of our almost kiss.I didn’t want to confront those feelings right now. Especially not since Nurse Harper had all but confirmed that Len hadn’t left her side until she was on the mend, and even then he left only to help Jim and Spock who had gone to rescue the Vulcan’s as quickly as they could before the planet had been consumed.
What’s worse, Nurse Harper hadn’t left my side. Always fretting over her, always making sure that she was okay and that her broken ankle or fractured wrist weren’t acting up. Especially since she had seen Nurse Harper rest a hand on Len’s shoulder almost in comfort. I didn’t like it, it was petty, and I knew it was because I was clinging onto hope that he felt for me what I felt for him. I would know of course If i would grow a pair, let Nurse Harper call Len over so we could talk about what had almost happened before we’d warped to the rescue. A part of me worried he would call it a mistake, so I didn’t call him over. I wouldn’t.
I also knew the only way I was going to be cleared was to give one of the battered Vulcan’s a clear bed, was if I was checked over. Apparently losing your planet and nearly being crushed was second priority to my own wounds which were mostly nonexistent now. The fatigue was still present as well as the muscle weakness, add on the broken ankle and fractured wrist and even if I wanted to get up to clear a bed and help, I wouldn’t be able to. I would be sent to the bridge to take over one of the Linguists stations. I wasn’t ready for that.
"I'm really fine Nurse Harper. Go away please." Harper gave me a sad look before moving away from my bedside. Settling myself against the bed a little more comfortably I picked up my patient Padd from the table by the bed where Harper had left it. Quickly unlocking it I thoroughly read through the medical report. Three broken bones, one broken leg, a fractured wrist, several muscle tears and a deep long laceration down my back from landing on the broken rubble from Deck 6. Not that bad compared to what it could have been, but definitely bad if I hadn’t been found when I was. I was more than grateful for the stitches and skin regrowth that had been treated on the cut.
"How you feelin' Doll?" Dropping the padd onto my bruised stomach and I flinched a little. Leonard quickly picked it up, moving it far out of my reach before settling at the end of the bed.
"McCoy, I'm fine. I promise. Don't you have other patients?"
"None that are as badly beat up as you are. Nell, I was terrified that I’d found you too late. That you were just like Puree, that I would have to tell Jim I’d failed and you were gone." Despite how touching his worry was, and how much I liked how much the thought of my death burned him (selfishly clinging onto the idea it burned because he cared for me more than a friend) I forced myself to roll my eyes.
"If I had, I'm sure you would have been fine after a while. Besides, you've got Nurse Harper and Jim’s got you and mom and our brother Goerge." Leo grabbed my hand tenderly, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Lonnie's nice enough but she doesn't have the spirit and sass my favorite girl does." I quirked an eyebrow.
"You would still have Jim, who is literally just like me when he cuts the ego off. I don't see how my passing would make a difference."
"I was talking about you Nell, you aren’t a thing like your brother, you never have been. You were the one who helped the most after my divorce and I've come to really depend on you." Blushing, I looked away trying to keep from showing how much his words meant to me.
"Get some sleep okay. When you wake up you should be healed enough to get up and walk around. I think you’re needed on the bridge anyway." With a kiss to my hairline Leonard brushed his thumb across my cheek before pushed off of her bed and walked over to Nurse Harper before leaving med bay entirely. Avoiding probing looks from the Vulcan’s gathered around in the medical space, I rolled over and attempted to get some actual rest and not the dark and dangerous unconsciousness I was plagued with only a few hours ago.
When you’re told to take a nap to feel better, you don’t expect the moment you wake up to receive news that makes you want to go on a homicidal killing spree. Which is probably why Len had dragged me into an isolated room to inform me that my brother had attempted to ‘Mutant’ and had been Vulcan nerve pinched and chucked off board. To say I was pissed was putting it mildly.
"What the hell do you mean my brother is no longer aboard McCoy!" My eyes were burning dangerously, my weight being held on my good foot didn’t deter me any as I advanced on the handsome doctor before me. Her blue eyes squinted in anger. Leonard raised his hands and surprised, clearly trying to keep me from doing anything that might potentially get me kicked off because he was now required to report any behavior not fitting a Starship.
"I mean Spock went all crazy Vulcan and sent him off the ship. Jim didn't agree with him on something and wouldn’t back down. I am supposed to go talk to him now and I was hoping you’d be calm enough to come with me so that I don't get out of hand. Now i’m not so sure that’s a good idea."
"Disagree or not, Vulcan’s run on logic Len. Logically kicking a cadet off of a starship outside of where we’re supposed to be isn’t logic. So it’s not me you need to worry about. Besides, aren’t I supposed to be headed up to the bridge anyway?" Leonard rolled his eyes but wrapped an arm around my waist supporting me as we walked out of the med bay and to the lift. Just like when we had arrived from the shuttles, it didn’t take long to reach the bridge.
Spock was wandering around looking almost lost, separated from the usual frey of the bridge activity. Len led us both over, gently releasing me to support myself so as to be taken seriously by the Vulcan acting-captain in front of us.
     "You wanted to see me?"
"Yes, Doctor. I'm aware that James Kirk is a friend of yours. Supporting me, as you did, must have been difficult."
     "Are you thanking me?"
     "I'm simply acknowledging your difficulties."
     "Permission to speak freely, sir."
     "I welcome it."
"Do you. Okay then: Are you out of your Vulcan Mind? Were you doing the logical thing? Maybe and Nell don't give me that look. the Right one? Debatable. But one thing's for damn sure- that kid doesn't know how to lose. Just isn't in his DNA. Back home we have a saying: "If you're gonna ride in the Kentucky Derby, don't leave your prize stallion in the stable."
"He's got a point, Spock. My brother has an incredibly high IQ and he thinks differently than you. He is an advantage not a disadvantage." For the first time Spock focused his dark gaze on me. Something untouchable was in his gaze, something I couldn’t make out or read.
"A curious metaphor, Doctor. As a stallion must first be broken before it can reach its potential as for what your were saying Nurse Kirk, your IQ and thought process are nearly identical to your brothers therefore even if it was needed I have you on board therefore your brother would remain unneeded." I raised an eyebrow and smirked a little. That was where he was wrong. Jim and I might have the same sense of humor, share the same level of sarcasm, and look the same but that is where our similarities differ greatly.
"Jim has the mind of a Captain, I have the mind of a Doctor. He knows the protocol and the thought process necessary to get out of touch situations. He doesn’t use it all the time but it’s there. I have the mind of a healer, a diplomat, a helper. We are different. There is a difference Captain." I didn’t stay to hear his response, it wouldn’t matter. Jim was gone, stranded on a planet alone and likely with nothing more than a communicator. If I wanted to prevent myself from landing in trouble just like him I had to watch my tone. So without the help of my best friend, I limped back through the bridge.
The pain from my wounds was beginning to peak their head up, which meant it was time to get off my feet. Still, something about Spock, Jim and Len was bothering me. Something I should have seen but wasn’t. Whatever it was, I hoped it wasn’t important.

I'm not sure if it's canon compliant but giving Bones an anxiety disorder makes for such an interesting dynamic. I mean. This man will not bat an eyelash when an augmented war lord tries to strangle him but has to perform breathing exercises before he uses a transporter. Exceptional

Chris Pine: Yeah I mean I’m NAMED Kirk and I’m gonna have SOME of Kirk’s personality traits but I am trying to somewhat make my own character
Zachary Quinto (in his oddly high pitched voice): I WILL be emotive because I MUST portray Spock’s inner turmoil! But not too much! Still gotta stay true to the character!
Karl Urban: I fused souls with DeForrest Kelly.
